Eine Musikwissenschaftlerin und Musikpublizistin, die sich nicht nur dem Schreiben über Musik der (freien) Improvisation widmet, sondern auch als Kontrabassistin aktiv ist und ein Komponist, dessen elektronische Kompositionen viel mit der Klanglichkeit und der Texturgebung manch freier Improvisation und experimenteller Musik gemeinsam hat. Seit 2012 arbeiten wir als Improvisations-Duo gemeinsam. Nina Polaschegg verwendet in ihrem Spiel neben dem puren gestrichenen und gezupften Bassklang zahlreiche Präparationen, um das Instrument neu zu denken und klangfarbliche Nuancen zu entwickeln. Bruno Strobl arbeitet mit Samples unterschiedlicher Herkunft – einige sind im Rahmen seiner kompositorischen Arbeit entstanden, viele sind nah mikrophoniert aufgenommene Kontrabassklänge von Nina Polaschegg. Pur gespielte Samples stehen neben stark elektronisch verfremdeten und bilden so ein Äquivalent zur mehrdimensionalen Klanggebung am Kontrabass. Dritter im Bunde ist stets der Raum. Seine Architektonik, seine Akustik, seine Atmosphäre, beziehen wir gezielt mit ein.
Unsere Arbeit ist geprägt von freiem Spiel wie strukturierendem Denken. Wir entwickeln mal strenge, mal lose Konzepte, die wir je nach Situation mehr oder weniger exakt im Konzert erfüllen oder auch von ihnen abweichen – geplant oder spontan im Hier & Jetzt im Laufe des Spiels entscheidend. Dann wieder spielen wir frei, ganz ohne Vorgaben, im Duo oder mit Gästen. Wie bei jeder eingespielten Improvisationsformation gilt auch hier – die erarbeiteten, erprobten, er-improvisierten Interaktionen, Klangfarben, Texturen etc. sind implizite Vorgaben, die sowohl gezielt genutzt werden, als auch bewusst als Reibeflächen dienen können.

Generell lassen wir uns in unseren Vorplanungen gerne auf die jeweiligen Situationen ein: Raum, Architektur, Publikum, Veranstalter (was findet dort sonst statt?). Oft ist es schlüssig, in einem Konzert Improvisation, Komposition und Konzept zu verbinden, gegeneinander zu stellen und aufeinander folgen zu lassen, manchmal ist freies Interagieren im jeweiligen Klangraum die richtige Wahl.

Bruno Strobl,

in Klagenfurt geboren, lebt als Komponist, Improvisationsmusiker und Elektroniker in Wien.

Verschiedene Preise und Auszeichnungen. Zahlreiche Aufführungen seiner Werke im In- und Ausland, bei vielen Festivals für neue Musik. Von 2002 bis 2006 verschiedene Musiktheaterprojekte in Zusammenarbeit mit „neuebuehnevillach“. Vielbeachtete Opern „Sara und ihre Männer“ (2012) und „HEMMA. Eine Weibspassion“ (2017) im „Carinthischen Sommer“ Ossiach.

Seit 2012 work in progress: Duo e&m (Nina Polaschegg - Kontrabass, Bruno Strobl – Elektronik).

Tomaž Grom – double bass

Nikola Vuković - trumpet


Tomaž Grom is a Slovenian double bassist, improviser, and composer, primarily active in the field of free improvised and contemporary experimental music. In addition to his solo work, he collaborates in numerous international projects and ensembles. He is the founder and artistic director of the Sploh Institute, which significantly contributes to the development of improvised music in Slovenia. Organizing concerts, workshops, and festivals, as well as connecting the local and international scenes, are key aspects of his work. His artistic practice is marked by in-depth exploration of sound, unconventional double bass techniques, and interdisciplinary collaborations with artists from various fields.

Nikola Vuković is a trumpeter, improviser, and composer based in Vienna. Born in Belgrade, he lived in Graz for eight years before moving to Vienna, where he studied jazz and contemporary music. Throughout his musical journey, he has continuously sought his own voice within the diverse and vibrant regional scene. By constantly moving between jazz, contemporary, and experimental music—always close to free improvisation—he has developed a distinctive sound of his own. He explores extended techniques and prepared instruments, placing them within an open, undefined sonic space where different musical approaches organically intertwine.
